NEWPORT, R.I. - Members of the University community are invited to two family-friendly events this month: Salve Regina Night at the Newport Gulls and the Community Picnic. Night at the Gulls will be held Friday, June 22, while the Community Picnic, returning after a three-year hiatus, will be held Tuesday, June 26.
Opening ceremonies begin at 6:15 p.m. and the game starts at 6:35 p.m. as the Gulls take on the New Bedford Bay Sox at historic Cardines Field.
Several members of the Salve Regina community will participate in Friday night's festivities. Mike Martin, coach of the 2012 national championship rugby team, and Dr. Traci Warrington, dean of professional studies, will throw out the first pitch, while Langston Neary, son of employees Tim and Aida Neary, will deliver the game ball to the starting pitcher.
Don St. Jean, faculty member in the Department of Performing Arts, will sing the national anthem. Additionally, Salve Regina's Challenger Little League team will be appearing during the opening ceremonies as baseball buddies.
During the game, Salve Regina volunteers will hold a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Kick-Start RI award program.
Tickets are complimentary, but members of the Salve Regina community are asked to take only as many as they need for their family to attend the game. Faculty, staff and summer work-study students can pick up tickets in the Office of Human Resources. Alumni, parents and friends are asked to contact the Office of Alumni/Parent Programs at (800) 821-2343 or alumni@salve.edu to reserve their tickets.
During the game, special prizes will be awarded to individuals wearing Salve Regina gear. Parking is available in the municipal lot behind the Gateway Center for a reduced rate with a Newport Gulls ticket stub.
All employees and their families are invited to attend the picnic, which will be held from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on the O'Hare lawn. This year's activities include a photo booth, pony rides, face painting, bingo, volleyball, ladder ball and children's games.
Schedule of Events
Employees who RSVP for the picnic will have their names entered into the raffle. Those who bring a non-perishable food item (to benefit the Martin Luther King Center pantry) will earn an extra raffle entry. Winners must be present to claim their prizes.
To date, raffle prizes donated by various departments include: Beach bag with two large beach towels, golf umbrella, Salve Regina apparel, assorted gift cards, handcrafted jewelry and Salve Regina mailbox piggybanks. Raffle prize donations are still welcome. To make a donation, contact Jackie Jaquette at Ext. 2137.
Faculty and staff are reminded to bring their own chairs and/or blankets and sunscreen. In addition, all employees are welcome to dress down on the day of the picnic. Employees who have yet to RSVP for the Community Picnic may do so by calling the Office of Human Resources at Ext. 2137.
