No. There is no policy against bringing your own computer. However, Salve Regina will not offer support for computers outside the program.
In both cases, it is possible to connect your own computer to either of Salve Regina's networks. Instructions will be posted online and at the student laptop center. Keep in mind, however, that you are responsible for setting this up on your own and the Office of Information Technologies can only offer limited assistance.
Yes. You will be able to purchase the Apple laptop through the program. The recommended Apple laptops will be made available after July 5 when all of our incoming students have received their Salve e-mail address and network credentials. A link will become available once our students log into the MySalve student portal.
The Office of Information Technologies puts no restrictions on your laptop. You will have full access and are free to install any programs.
Yes. Your laptop will become your personal property upon purchase. You are free to keep it after graduation or if you withdraw from the University prior to graduation.
Your laptop will be configured to connect to Salve Regina's wired network without additional setup.
Not necessarily. The amount you use your laptop in classes will depend on the individual instructor and your preferences.
You are responsible for loss or theft of your laptop. You should check with your parents' personal insurance agent as many homeowners or renters policies cover theft or damage. If your parents do not have coverage for theft or damage to laptops, you are highly advised to purchase supplemental personal property insurance. Your HP recommended laptop is covered by a four-year warranty and provides coverage for accidental damage, including drops/falls, an electrical surge or spills. Your Apple recommended laptop is covered by a three-year warranty. You can bring your laptop to the student laptop center in McKillop 008 to have it diagnosed and/or repaired.
No. Anyone who is comfortable with using Web browsers and word processing will be able to use the computer effectively. General instruction material will be provided.
Yes. USB peripherals such as mouse, keyboard, hard drives and Flash drives will be supported.
Windows 7 Enterprise Edition will be available for the HP recommended laptop and OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard will be available for the recommended Apple laptop.
All licensed software and operating system updates will be made available to actively enrolled students.
No, not directly to the residence network. You will be able to access webmail and other web services such as My Data, My Information and WebCT via the My Salve institutional portal.
No. Access to public printers will be provided through the network and instructions will be provided. If you wish to use your own personal printer, you must provide your own.
