This photo by Mary Pearsall '11 of the military-issued boots her boyfriend wore during his year-long deployment to Afghanistan was one of more than 100 student works featured in the Best of Students Show at the Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery Sept. 7 through Oct. 2, 2011.
"I know many people who are involved in different levels and branches of the military and I wanted to comment on the discrepancies between the perceptions and realities of war," Pearsall writes. "I believe there is a certain amount of idealism and romanticism attached to the idea of war, war-torn lovers, and brave soldiers. We often seem to forget that these ideas are embodied by real people, and the loss of one life can shatter hundreds. These boots are a physical representation of the idea of war, the idea of the brave soldier, and the reality that someone has to fill them."
Salve Regina University salutes those who serve our nation and celebrates all military heroes such as Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba '88 (M), whose son is currently serving in Afghanistan. (Please see story on page 22.)
